Tellus Nullius Series
‘Tellus Nullius’ is a series of work developed over the last 7 years encompassing an immersive 3-channel video installation, a series of single channel videos and print works. All visual imagery was photographed and filmed in Coigach and Assynt in the far Northwest Highlands of Scotland, within an ancient and elemental landscape where the science of the Earth’s geological evolution is evident and was historically established.
This is a wild, beautiful and remote coastal region where the three eco-spheres of air, water and earth dramatically interact. Its aeonic evolutionary timespan can still be observed, sensed and experienced in geological and fossil material, despite the exploitation and depreciation humans have enacted on this unique land and marine eco-sphere in the age of the relative ‘eye-blink’ of the Anthropocene.
Through material encounters with this aeonic elemental biosphere there is a metaphysical battle across space and time to discover and make meaning, both personal and universal.
‘Tellus’ refers to Earth itself, the encompassing globe and its holistic eco-sphere. ‘Nullius’ is a term relating to the notion of territory unclaimed or unowned, emphasising the significance that we humans are not owners, but merely co-tenants of the planet, with its diverse riches and resources.
‘Tellus Nullius’ series was first presented in ‘Aeonic’, an exhibition and video installation in 2023 at An Talla Solais Gallery, Ullapool, the centre for the Northwest Highlands where the project. was photographed, filmed and developed. The centre point of the series is ‘Tells Nullius Tria’ - an immersive 3-channel video installation, and a series of associated printwork’s
